Our Story

Refugee Assistance Brockville and Area was started by City of Brockville Mayor, David Henderson, with the intention of creating one community effort that would optimize resources and maximize results. The first town hall meeting was held in the fall 2015. Since then we have continued to hold regular community meetings, created an Organizing Committee to coordinate and a Fundraising Committee to gather resources.

Several groups that had already begun this humanitarian work have continued with their own efforts while linking arms with the larger community group and have become leaders and experts to help others contribute more effectively.

This effort has attracted many churches, community organizations, media, business and community development leaders.

Refugees for Brockville (RFB) started by City of Brockville Mayor, David Henderson, with the intention of creating one community effort that would optimize resources and maximize results. The first town hall meeting was held in the fall 2015. Dr. Jacqueline Schoemaker Holmes was appointed the new Chair for the Refugees for Brockville steering Committee by the Mayor in December 2016.  Jacqueline has been leading the steering Committees monthly meetings since January 2017.

In 2015 - 2016, the RFB Committee consisted of mostly sponsorship group representative, and RFB mission was to bring 10+ families to Brockville as fast as we could by working together. In June 2017, Refugees for Brockville’s mission to welcome 10+ refugee families was fulfilled.  However, the settlement journey that refugees face is long. As local newcomers continue to establish their lives in Brockville, they will be faced with expenses that exceed their or their sponsorship group’s budget. Therefore, the RFB Committee’s vision remains the same, but it now focused on the successful integration of refugees in Brockville.
